Going from Blonde to Blue Black Hair

Hi everyone! I think I have mentioned already that I really fell in love with the blonde hair this time around, but felt like I needed a change. Yes… AGAIN. Also, the upkeep of bleach blonde hair is too much for me right now. With moving and everything I don’t really want to worry about retouching my roots and all that. So what color did I choose to go with this time? Well, the complete opposite of blonde. Blue black.

I headed to my local Sally’s Beauty and began browsing the huge selection of hair dyes they carry. I stopped in front of the Ion Color Brilliance Ultra Gloss and remembered that I had read that it leaves your hair looking super shiny, so I grabbed two tubes of the blue black dye and headed back home.

I had every intention of getting to the dying process right away but to tell you guys the truth, I started to feel a little regret. I looked in the mirror at my bleached hair and remembered the hard work I put in to get it that way. Multiple bleaching, toning, retouching, and conditioning treatments. Then my eyes focused on the ends of my hair. It was damaged and the color or lack thereof was not helping it look any better. So I came to terms with saying goodbye to the blonde and prepared to embrace my new, but familiar darker shade.

I had resolved with going through with the new color, but waited so that I could enjoy being blonde for just a couple of more days. So, two days later I began placing all of the necessary items I needed on my bathroom counter to begin the coloring process. Mixing bowl check, brush check, dye, and developer check. Oh and be sure to have gloves otherwise you will have blue hands! I picked up two tubes of the dye since my hair is long, so I read the instructions and mixed 4oz of the blue black crème with 4 oz of 20% developer. I noticed that the mixture looked and felt a little different than other dyes I’ve used. I had to mix it more than other dyes because I could still see bits in it that didn’t seem mixed in, but I think that may have been something to do with the ultra gloss part of the dye.

After mixing, I started to paint the new shade onto my colorless locks. I was halfway done when I looked down and realized that I may be a little shy on the dye so I meticulously scraped every last bit stuck to the bowl and somehow was able to cover my whole head. **If you have long hair like me or if you hair tends to suck up product like mine, I suggest getting three tubes of the dye. Trust me. It will save you the trouble of freaking out with only 20% of your hair left to go.

After I was done with coloring, I wrapped my head in plastic wrap and watched as the color grew darker as I waited the 45 minutes for the color to process. After 45 minutes, I rinsed, shampooed, and conditioned my hair before blow drying. I definitely didn’t regret my decision to go dark again after I saw the results. My hair looks super shiny as well as feels and looks WAY better than it had an hour ago.

My thoughts on the Ion Color Brilliance dye? Love it! The color is amazing. My hair has a nice blue tint in dim lighting and is an awesome blue shade in the sunlight. It’s exactly what I was looking for. A lot of other blue black dyes I have tried don’t seem to have a lot of blue in them. The consistency of the dye was also easy to work with, but I was concerned at first when I saw bits of dye that didn’t seem to be mixing in. As a result, I think I mixed for way longer than I should have, but the bright side is I think the bits possibly had something to do with the dye being a glossy dye. I definitely recommend the Ion Color Brilliance Ultra Gloss and am curious to see how their other shades turn out.

Below I will insert a picture of the blonde side by side with the blue black.
